- Began training in 2001
- Received his Shodan (1st degree black belt) in 2006
- Also received a black belt from the Goshin Karate Dojo in 2006
I met Ray Hughes in 2001 when he was a guest Sensei at Goshin, the dojo I was training at the time. 9/11 had just happened and Sensei Ray was there to train us in self-defense tactics. He invited any of us to his dojo to train with his students. I really liked the atmosphere and camaraderie of his dodo and students so I trained both at SMAC (Wado) and Goshin (Okinawan Kempo). I received black belts from both dojos three months apart in 2006. Interestingly, the Katas for both disciplines are very similar, so it was difficult to keep the two separate when testing.
I really enjoy all the friendships I have found while training, and I met my beautiful wife, Sensei Maria Blanco at SMAC. I teach Wednesday morning class for all belt levels at 9:00am.
